Why is Toenail Fungus a Problem?

Toenail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis, affects 8-10% of all adults, a percentage that increases with age. Diabetics and people with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible. Common symptoms include nails that are think, discolored (yellow, black, brown or green) and/or brittle, and often smell foul. Not only is toenail fungus embarrassing, it can be painful and debilitating.

The latest oral medications have proved more effective for treating toenail fungus than over- the- counter/topical remedies, but oral medications carry risks of dangerous side effects and possible drug interactions.

Laser technology offers a safe, non-invasive and effective way to eliminate toenail fungus and there are several different laser technologies being used by podiatrists today. Some lasers have been repurposed from other medical applications, and many use considerable heat to burn out the fungus.

The Foot & Ankle Centre of New Jersey was the first podiatry practice in Northern New Jersey to use the Noveon laser, which was designed specifically to treat toenail fungus. The Noveon laser uses a patented dual wavelength system that bathes the nail in light to treat the root of the fungal infection as well as the nail. In a study of 199 patients published in peer-reviewed science journals, more than 95% saw improvement after treatment with the Noveon laser.

Noveon Laser’s advanced technology:

  • Uses light rather than heat to eradicate the fungus.
  • Prevents damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Effectively treats fungus with better outcomes and fewer complications.
  • Is quick—typically three, 20-minute sessions in our office over the course of 6 weeks.
